A case for the Trans-Texas Corridor

From Taylor Daily Press, july 23, 2008...

Taylor used to be a player in Williamson County, with it and Georgetown vying for funds and the attention of passers-through.

But no more, and despite what many city officials will tell you, it will not be a player unless something is done to counteract the rapid growth of surrounding communities. What needs to be done is, Taylor needs to forget its past and embrace something residents see as so vile, that when I first arrived here I thought its mere mention was a dirty word. I am speaking of Rick Perry’s Trans-Texas Corridor.

The Texas Department of Transportation (another dirty word in Taylor) shows the superhighway running just west of town, next to the airport and up through U.S. 29 just west of S.H. 95 — coincidentally, right through the property of the avid TTC opponent who showed me the possible path.

Where to sample the best Texas Hill Country barbecue

From dallasnews.com, May 20, 2008...

There's excellent barbecue all around the state, if you know where to look. But the concentration of pits in and near the Hill Country makes Austin a logical base camp for a day or a weekend of barbecue.

When Roadfoodies Jane and Michael Stern led a barbecue bus tour earlier this year, they followed a path east of Interstate 35 that took them to four of the most revered pits in the state. With, of course, a breakfast stop at Round Rock Donuts. You don't want to be too hungry at the first barbecue joint.

Annexation’s Role in City Growth

From Community Impact April 11, 2008...

The populations of Georgetown, Hutto and Taylor continue to increase, causing city officials routinely to evaluate the size of their cities land-wise. But acquiring more land is not as easy as it was in the 1800s, when pioneers raced to claim their new property by simply driving a stake into the ground.

When cities today want to expand their limits, city staff must engage in the process of annexation.

“The basic reasons cities annex are to control or regulate development, and the second reason, which is arguably the most important reason, is to expand the city’s tax base,” said Scott Houston, legal department director at the Texas Municipal League.
