From Progressive Railroading, August 26, 2008...
Construction is progressing on Capital Metro's 32-mile Leander-to-Austin, Texas, passenger-rail line, which is set to open later this year.
The agency has nearly completed the Leander, Lakeline and Plaza Saltillo stations, while work on the Crestview and Highland stations is expected to conclude by October. Capital Metro recently launched construction on Downtown Station, which is projected to open in November, and accelerated construction on the MLK Station so it's open by the time service begins. Next month, the agency will begin building the Howard Station.
Transit-oriented development plans are under way at most stations, as well, including an office, retail and residential project at Crestview Station, and a mixed-use project adjacent to Crestview Station.

Leander TOD developers try to get on track
From The Austin Business Journal (print edition), June 6, 2008...
Many Central Texas analysts are predicting that the worst of the Austin area's housing market woes may be over. But as the dust settles, developers of some of the region's largest real estate projects -- including those that will make up the 2,300-acre Leander transit-oriented development -- face difficult decisions as they move their projects from conceptual to tangible.
The question on everybody's mind, says Leander Economic Development Director Kirk Clennan, is whether the money will come back now that Central Texas has weathered the credit crunch. But even finding consensus on that question isn't simple.

Crossing on Schedule for 2008 Groundbreaking
From Hill Country News April 6, 2008...
Leander's biggest clothing retailer may just be inside a grocery store - next to a deli, several fruit stands and some party supplies. H-E-B plus! has the monopoly on many retail items in Leander, but a new giant will soon be coming nearby.
Leander Crossing - a planned mixed-use project that will gobble up more than 150 acres, partly in the TOD - is scheduled to break ground for 1,100 single-family and multi-family units sometime this year, with even bigger commercial development beginning in 2009.

Leander To Pave Its Future In 2008
From The Hill Country News December 21, 2007...
TOD, roads, rail, development will take shape
For Leander, 2008 is going to be a year of growing pains, which will pave the way for an exciting 2009.
“I feel like ‘08 is going to still be modest,” said Leander Economic Director Kirk Clennan. “I believe that horizontal construction is going to lead to a great ‘09.”The coming year will be filled mostly with continued planning and road construction, which will provide a solid infrastructure for new developments, especially within the transit-oriented development.
One of the key projects within the TOD, the Leander Transit Village, is on hold pending the completion of County Road 273, according to Lance Hughes of Hughes Capital Management.
