From small town to boom town

From statesman, November 28, 2008...

At least one area in Central Texas is thriving these days despite the real estate slowdown: Liberty Hill, the small town just north of Cedar Park and Leander.

In fact, Liberty Hill is in the only real estate zone in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop and Hays counties where more homes have sold this year than last. Through October, 150 homes have sold there, with a median price of $217,000. That compares with 112 homes sold through October 2007, with a median price of $229,840.

County buys 1,011 acres for Westside Park

From Wilcounty Line, September 10, 2008...

In November 2006, the voters of Williamson County approved a $22 million park bond to be used for the purchase of new parkland and open space as well as improvements to parks. The county is completing the purchase of the second piece of parkland recommended by the 2006 Park Bond task force.

The first parkland purchase was approved in November 2007. It is 348 acres of land on SH 29 two miles east of Jonah. The land is on the San Gabriel River with beautiful bluffs and pecan groves. The second parkland purchase is 1,011 acres of land fronting on CR 282 in southern Liberty Hill. It also has South San Gabriel River frontage and beautiful hill country views.

Master plans for both parks will be developed in the future.

Texas 29 expansion to pass south of Liberty Hill

From statesman, September 4, 2008...

The route for a planned expansion of Texas 29 in the northwestern part of Williamson County will pass south of Liberty Hill, several commissioners announced Wednesday.

Expansion of the five-lane highway is part of a long-range countywide transportation plan designed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing county. The county plans to make Texas 29, which now goes through Liberty Hill, the main east-west corridor for an area where county leaders say the next wave of growth will happen. The county estimates that in the next 25 years, 60 to 65 percent of its growth will be west of Interstate 35.

The route follows the existing Texas 29 route except for the bypass around Liberty Hill and the 3,900 residents in and around the city.

Dozens of possible routes north and south of the city were considered, but Long and Commissioner Valerie Covey on Wednesday said the southern route was chosen because there are fewer residents and businesses in the area.

"With Cedar Park and Round Rock almost built out, that will push that growth north into places like Leander and Liberty Hill," said Michael Weaver of Prime Strategies Inc., which manages the county's road bond program.

Williamson County to purchase 1,011 acres for future park

From statesman, August 26, 2008...

Williamson County commissioners voted Tuesday to purchase 1,011 acres of land that will serve as the county's largest park.

The county plans to buy the property, which is on the South San Gabriel River south of Liberty Hill and has rolling hills, and live oak and cedar trees, for roughly $10.6 million, $2 million less than what commissioners originally planned to spend on another park site north of Liberty Hill.

The 1,011 acres are owned by Andrew Williams and his two siblings, who inherited the land that their father bought in 1940.

From Community Impact, August 15, 2008...

Williamson County commissioners Valerie Covey, precinct three, and Cynthia Long, precinct two, are studying ways to expand Hwy. 29 from D.B. Wood Drive to the Burnet/Williamson county line.

Many residents of neighborhoods adjacent to the road, most wearing red shirts in opposition to an expansion, attended an open house in Liberty Hill Aug. 4. Questions were shouted at the commissioners, including "Will this be a toll road?" The answer was "We don't know."

Officials say U.S. 183 near Liberty Hill has become dangerous

From statesman.com, August 14, 2008...

Residents and business owners along U.S. 183 have known for a while that the road would need to be reconstructed to adapt to the growing population in Williamson County.

In an 8-mile stretch of the highway between Leander and Liberty Hill, 35 accidents have occurred in the past year.

The most recent one was on Aug. 2, when Casey Lynn Furtado of Liberty Hill, who was eight months pregnant, and Sherry Schaefer Ray of Eastland were killed in a head-on collision.

Emergency crews, drivers call for Highway 183 changes

From KVUE, August 4, 2008...

A fatal car crash over the weekend highlights the dangers of a stretch of Highway 183.

In Liberty Hill the highway turns into a small, four-lane stretch of road with fast speed limits, narrow lanes and small shoulders.

“There's not much room for error. The margin of error is pretty small,” said Chief James Pogue, Liberty Hill Fire Department.

New park site for Williamson examined

From statesman.com, August 1, 2008...

Williamson County commissioners are backing off on their original plan to buy 865 acres of parkland north of Liberty Hill and are now considering a larger piece of property just south of the city that officials say could be cheaper.

Officials said that the first site — which has 10-mile vistas, rolling hills and riverfront property — is still an option, as are others. But after commissioners voted in early July to negotiate buying the land for up to $12.5 million, they were contacted by other landowners, who offered their land for less money per acre.

"When we're using taxpayer dollars, we have to be fiscally responsible, and another tract of land was brought to our attention," Commissioner Cynthia Long said.

Williamson County's plans for highway causing small uproar

From statesman.com, July 7, 2008...

The county in a few weeks, after the completion of an initial $2.4 million engineering study of potential routes, will announce its preferred path for what would be a six-lane expressway (with up to six frontage road lanes alongside) on the Texas 29 corridor from just west of Georgetown to the Burnet County line a few miles past Liberty Hill. Those 12 potential lanes would require an Interstate 35-sized swath of right of way: 400 feet, more than triple the 120 feet the state owns on Texas 29 now.

Williamson County takes steps to buy land for biggest park yet

From statesman.com, July 9, 2008...

Williamson County commissioners voted Tuesday to spend as much as $12.5 million on what will be the county's largest park if a contract between the county and the property's owner is approved in coming weeks.

The 865 acres lie north of Liberty Hill and have bluffs with 10-mile views of the county, rolling hills and riverfront property, commissioners said. The sale, which was opposed by two commissioners, had been suggested by the landowner, whose development plans were sidelined by recent problems in the housing market.

State Highway 29 expansion in the works

From News 8 Austin, May 13, 2008...

Williamson County plans for the future of State Highway 29.

The county eventually wants to make it a 400-foot wide highway -- much like State Highway 290 -- that stretches from Georgetown to the Burnet County line.

But first, they need to acquire the land along that corridor and figure out what will happen in areas like Liberty Hill where homes and businesses already line the four-lane highway.

K.C. Royals Manager Enjoys Living in Liberty Hill Texas

From USA Today January 22, 2008...

LIBERTY HILL, Texas — Trey Hillman read the letter from the 49-year-old high school coach asking for advice on how he, too, could realize his dream of becoming a major league manager.

"He assumed I was plucked off the street," says Hillman, 45, the Kansas City Royals' rookie manager. "So I called him. I'm not going to sit there and tell him it's not possible, but I also educated him about where I'd come from."
