Austin is one of four cities where the U.S. Mint has chosen to push use of the $1 coin.
The pilot program aims to inspire consumers to use the $1 coin in their everyday activities. Austin joins Grand Rapids, Mich., Portland, Ore., and Charlotte, N.C. as the four pilot cities.
