From News 8 Austin, December 29, 2008...
The sound of an oncoming train is all too familiar for Cedar Park resident Lacey Melchor. Her yard backs up to the railroad crossing on New Hope Drive.
"If they have the horn on, it shakes the house," Melchor said.

Cap Metro to activate quiet zones for Metrorail
From News 8 Austin, December 28, 2008...
Capital Metro will implement its Railroad Quiet Zone mandate in Cedar Park starting January 1.
The quiet zone designation means trains will not be required to sound horns as they approach certain crossings.
Those include:
- Block House drive
- New Hope Drive
- RM 1431
- Discovery Boulevard
- Park Street
- Brushy Creek Road.
Cap Metro said it's important for anyone who lives, works or travels near these crossings to stay aware of the change. Because of lighter, quieter, and faster Metrorail trains, it can be difficult to notice them.

2008 a big year for transportation in Texas
From statesman, December 22, 2008...
Texas Transportation Commission chairman Ric Williamson, whose imposing will and enterprising ideas had dominated state transportation policy for five years, died of a heart attack in a Weatherford hospital the morning of Dec. 30, 2007 . His sudden absence — coming just as the agency he ran was facing a cash crunch and an as-yet-undisclosed accounting problem of historic proportions — left TxDOT rudderless. That leadership vacuum affected everything to come in 2008, at least in Texas highway circles.
Capital Metro, meanwhile, had a whirlwind of a year, raising fares as ridership boomed, weathering a strike and announcing when its over-budget and tardy passenger rail line would open.

Inter-city rail planned to run by 2012
From Impact News, September 26, 2008...
A passenger rail line from Leander to downtown is scheduled to open soon, but the north side of Austin is not the only community exploring alternative transportation options.
The Austin-San Antonio Intermunicipal Commuter Rail District plans to carry passengers from Georgetown to San Antonio by 2011 or 2012 with a stop at Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road, but the reality of that vision will have a lot to do with decisions during the next legislative session.

Transportation: moving right along
From Impact News, September 26, 2008...
Moving throughout Northwest Austin could become easier in the next year with passenger rail lines opening and bus services expanding.
“In terms of service, Capital Metro is trying to get as much service in Northwest Austin as possible,” said Misty Whited, Capital Metro communications specialist. “That’s the area where we are seeing an increase in ridership, especially in the Tech Ridge, Lakeline and Leander routes. We’re trying to get more buses out there and make them more comfortable with our express routes.”

Tracking Cap Metro's Eastward Proposal
From Austin Chronicle, September 12, 2008...
Is passenger rail for the East Austin growth corridor a wise regional transportation investment? For the first time, the just-released Capital Metro report "Austin-Manor-Elgin Corridor: A Preliminary Review" provides the hard data – or at least good estimates – to make that call. In sum, the report makes the case for expanding the region's commuter rail system by adding a second, eastward Green Line to complement the westerly Red Line – although its feasibility depends on whether the tracks can become lined with dense new transit villages developed around passenger stations.
