From KXAN, May 4, 2009...
A lunchtime view across Lake Marble Falls is a welcome break from the workday for Interim City Manager Ralph Hendricks. He hopes a plan beginning this week will entice others to follow suit.
Hendricks said, “Economic development plan will receive a plan for expanding our pavilion into an event center this week.”
Up the hill, he says downtown could use some help from what’s lapping below. But there’s no real connection between the historic Main Street and the water. Businesses sit about four blocks from the banks.
“The center of town, the center of activity in our town have moved,” said Hendricks. “So we need to move our Main Street to match that movement.”

San Marcos seeks economic identity through strategic plan
From Austin Business Journal, April 17, 2009...
Business and civic leaders in and around San Marcos hope to step out of Austin’s economic shadow by forging a growth strategy for the city.
San Marcos’ leaders have long touted the city’s strategic location on the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio and the city’s assets — including a recently expanded hospital, university, new convention center and major retail presence. Yet its economic growth has lagged in the past, a trend the city’s leadership is trying to reverse by crafting the area’s first strategic plan for economic development.

Todd: State could miss out on trade if rail relocation doesn’t push forward
From Austin Business Journal, January 28, 2009...
New concerns raised Wednesday by Bruce Todd, the former Austin mayor and current executive director of the Texas Rail Relocation and Improvement Association, suggest Texas could lose a chance to expand its role in foreign trade if funding for the state’s rail relocation initiative doesn’t come quicker.
A $5.25 billion expansion of the Panama Canal, set for completion in 2014, could bring more cargo ships to Texas ports, Todd said in a statement. But, he said, that extra cargo could be paralyzed if the freight rail lines serving ports aren’t upgraded.

TxDOT Chair: $313B needed for Tex. transportation over 20 years
From Austin Business Journal, January 21, 2009...
Deirdre Delisi, chair of the Texas Department of Transportation, spoke to members of the Real Estate Council of Austin on Wednesday about TxDOT’s conversations with legislators and funding options for future mobility.
Delisi had a rapt audience, and acknowledged the need for effective transportation in continuing economic development. She touched on the TxDOT’s “Innovative Connectivity” plan, the department’s goals for working with local governments, recommendations from the state’s Sunset Commission and statewide funding needs.
The department’s 2030 Committee has finished a preliminary plan, Delisi said, that estimates the state will need $313 billion between 2009 and 2030 to adequately meet Texas’ transportation needs. The department has also identified $6 billion in shovel-ready transportation projects that could begin this year with adeqaute funding.
Where that money will come from, though, is not yet clear, she said.

Destination retail in the works for Georgetown
From News 8 Austin, December 31, 2008...
Down the Alley Bistro in Downtown Georgetown has been in business for five years.
Owner Ralph Acquaro said he's got a good customer base, but it could be better.
"During the day we do fairly well because we have all the businesses, banks and law offices," he said. "It's at night that we're really looking to have more of an attraction down here."
Hearing about the possibility of a winery coming to town piqued Acquaro's interest.
"Yeah, it's a compliment for us," he said. "It would be great."
Georgetown's Economic Development Director Mark Thomas said retail development is a goal of the city's.
"Part of the downtown master plan is to get as much destination retail down on the square," he said.
