River cruises vanish due to lake levels

From KXAN, April 29, 2009...

This season, the Vanishing Texas River Cruise has lived up to its name. Passengers have not seen the prime attractions because the water level on Lake Buchanan is so low.

Drought effects on Central Texas boating

From KXAN, January 9, 2009...

Central Texas drought continues. Local lakes are up to 14 feet below normal levels. The economy is struggling and people are cutting back on luxury items. A favorite warm weather activity, boating, is actually doing well.

Portions of Central Texas have seen only 25 to 50 percent of the normal amount of rain in 2008. According to the Lower Colorado River Authority , rain totals are running eight to 12 inches below normal. In the worst regions, rain totals are running between 12 and 20 inches below normal. As of Dec. 18, Lake Buchanan was about seven feet below the historic December average, while Lake Travis was about 13 feet below. Many boaters are not finding the lower lake levels a bother.

When a boat capsizes on Lake Travis - one of Central Texas' main sources of drinking water - it can impact more than just the people on board. On May 28, a stolen boat sank in front of the VIP Marina in Volente, leaking gasoline into the water for several hours before it could be removed.

Although Lake Travis is managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority, Volente Mayor Jan Yenawine said LCRA officials told him they were not responsible for water quality, referring him instead to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). He said TCEQ representatives told him dealing with the gasoline leak was LCRA's responsibility.

Survey: Lake Residents Concerned About Water Project

From statesman.com, May 8, 2008...

Last month, residents were asked to give their take on a water project that will eventually pump up to 105 million gallons of water a day from Lake Travis to Cedar Park, Leander and Round Rock. The survey results are in, and the three cities heard the same thing they've been hearing for a year: Residents on the lake aren't happy with the $330 million project.
