Williamson County's hiring of PR firm for controversial road project upsets some

From statesman, September 23, 2008...

The hiring of a public relations firm by Williamson County commissioners has drawn the ire of some residents and a political hopeful, who say that the contract is a waste of taxpayer money and that the timing is suspicious in light of controversial plans for expanding Texas 29.

County officials contend otherwise, saying Martin & Salinas Public Affairs Inc. was hired in late March to create more openness and to get more information to residents about the county's $228 million road bond package, approved by voters in 2006.

SH 29 Expansion Not to be Built for 15 Years

From Eye on Williamson, September 4, 2008...

While from the standpoint of displacing homeowners and ultimately, for them - cheaper start-up costs (buying land) - the south was probably their preference from the beginning. Here’s a link to the text of the email Commissioner’s Valerie Covey and Cynthia Long sent out announcing their decision. After going through, again, an attempt to justify the need for this action now we get to the meat of the announcement.

Texas 29 expansion to pass south of Liberty Hill

From statesman, September 4, 2008...

The route for a planned expansion of Texas 29 in the northwestern part of Williamson County will pass south of Liberty Hill, several commissioners announced Wednesday.

Expansion of the five-lane highway is part of a long-range countywide transportation plan designed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing county. The county plans to make Texas 29, which now goes through Liberty Hill, the main east-west corridor for an area where county leaders say the next wave of growth will happen. The county estimates that in the next 25 years, 60 to 65 percent of its growth will be west of Interstate 35.

The route follows the existing Texas 29 route except for the bypass around Liberty Hill and the 3,900 residents in and around the city.

Dozens of possible routes north and south of the city were considered, but Long and Commissioner Valerie Covey on Wednesday said the southern route was chosen because there are fewer residents and businesses in the area.

"With Cedar Park and Round Rock almost built out, that will push that growth north into places like Leander and Liberty Hill," said Michael Weaver of Prime Strategies Inc., which manages the county's road bond program.

Williamson County commissioners study corridor expansion options from Georgetown to Burnet county line

From Community Impact, August 15, 2008...

Williamson County commissioners Valerie Covey, precinct three, and Cynthia Long, precinct two, are studying ways to expand Hwy. 29 from D.B. Wood Drive to the Burnet/Williamson county line.

Many residents of neighborhoods adjacent to the road, most wearing red shirts in opposition to an expansion, attended an open house in Liberty Hill Aug. 4. Questions were shouted at the commissioners, including "Will this be a toll road?" The answer was "We don't know."

A case for the Trans-Texas Corridor

From Taylor Daily Press, july 23, 2008...

Taylor used to be a player in Williamson County, with it and Georgetown vying for funds and the attention of passers-through.

But no more, and despite what many city officials will tell you, it will not be a player unless something is done to counteract the rapid growth of surrounding communities. What needs to be done is, Taylor needs to forget its past and embrace something residents see as so vile, that when I first arrived here I thought its mere mention was a dirty word. I am speaking of Rick Perry’s Trans-Texas Corridor.

The Texas Department of Transportation (another dirty word in Taylor) shows the superhighway running just west of town, next to the airport and up through U.S. 29 just west of S.H. 95 — coincidentally, right through the property of the avid TTC opponent who showed me the possible path.

Open House for Hwy 29 Corridor Study on August 4

From Wilcounty Line, July, 2008...

Williamson County will host an open house for the State Highway (SH) 29 Corridor Study on August 4 in the Liberty Hill High School cafeteria located at 13125 West SH 29. From 6 to 8 p.m., residents will have an opportunity to visit individually with the engineering firm leading the analysis, as well as representatives of the county.

The primary objective for the evening is to provide a venue in which members of the community can provide feedback about the various alternative alignments under review and the plan to eliminate 13 alignments. No formal presentations are scheduled; the issues matrix for each alignment will be available for review, and engineers and other research specialists will be available to answer questions.

More information on the proposed plan is available by clicking details. Revised maps are available on the website. For more information, call 943-1195 or email roads@wilco.org.

Williamson County's plans for highway causing small uproar

From statesman.com, July 7, 2008...

The county in a few weeks, after the completion of an initial $2.4 million engineering study of potential routes, will announce its preferred path for what would be a six-lane expressway (with up to six frontage road lanes alongside) on the Texas 29 corridor from just west of Georgetown to the Burnet County line a few miles past Liberty Hill. Those 12 potential lanes would require an Interstate 35-sized swath of right of way: 400 feet, more than triple the 120 feet the state owns on Texas 29 now.

State Highway 29 expansion in the works

From News 8 Austin, May 13, 2008...

Williamson County plans for the future of State Highway 29.

The county eventually wants to make it a 400-foot wide highway -- much like State Highway 290 -- that stretches from Georgetown to the Burnet County line.

But first, they need to acquire the land along that corridor and figure out what will happen in areas like Liberty Hill where homes and businesses already line the four-lane highway.
