Cedar Park silences noisy train horns

From News 8 Austin, December 29, 2008...

The sound of an oncoming train is all too familiar for Cedar Park resident Lacey Melchor. Her yard backs up to the railroad crossing on New Hope Drive.

"If they have the horn on, it shakes the house," Melchor said.

Cap Metro to activate quiet zones for Metrorail

From News 8 Austin, December 28, 2008...

Capital Metro will implement its Railroad Quiet Zone mandate in Cedar Park starting January 1.
The quiet zone designation means trains will not be required to sound horns as they approach certain crossings.

Those include:
- Block House drive
- New Hope Drive
- RM 1431
- Discovery Boulevard
- Park Street
- Brushy Creek Road.

Cap Metro said it's important for anyone who lives, works or travels near these crossings to stay aware of the change. Because of lighter, quieter, and faster Metrorail trains, it can be difficult to notice them.

What's in rail name? Tougher rules

From statesman, September 22, 2008...

Turns out that what Capital Metro is building is a light-rail line after all. Or so the agency says now.

Back in 2004, when voters were asked to give the agency approval for the line from Leander to downtown Austin, the agency was adamant that it be called "urban commuter rail." They were OK with shortening that to "commuter rail," which the Statesman archive tells me I've done more than 150 times in the paper since then.

But not "light rail," a politically radioactive term around Austin after voters rejected a light-rail plan just four years before. No, we're asking you for something materially different from light rail, Capital Metro said.

Streetcar: The Work Plan

From Austin Chronicle, August 15, 2008...

It's full steam ahead! In an Aug. 8 memo to City Council, new Assistant City Manager Sue Edwards laid out an ambitious work plan for developing a full proposal for an urban rail streetcar system. The work plan is based on the system recommended by the ROMA Austin consultant team, presented at council July 24 (see "Developing Stories," Aug. 1). Capital Metro staff will work closely with city staff and ROMA; if approved by its board, Cap Metro will be a joint sponsor of the proposal to be submitted to the Transit Working Group at the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization

$600 million streetcar plan offered for Austin

From statesman.com, July 25, 2008...

Central Austin should have a 15.3-mile streetcar system, consultants hired by the Austin City Council told members Thursday, a slight refinement of a proposal that the ROMA Design Group unveiled in April.

The proposal, similar in many respects to downtown rail plans that have been circulating for about three years, remains well short of a finished product. And the proposal lacks what is perhaps the most critical information: how the city or Capital Metro, or some entity to be named later, would pay for it.

Streetcar proposal outlined to City Council

From Austin Business Journal, July 25, 2008...

Consultants with ROMA Design Group outlined details of a $600 million streetcar proposal for Central Austin to the Austin City Council on July 24.

The proposed system is similar to a concept ROMA outlined in April, except that proposal recommended light rail as opposed to streetcars. The city and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization have been talking about a downtown circulator system since 2007.

Light rail vote postponed

From KXAN.com, July 9, 2008...

City leaders wanted a public vote by November. But a vote on new "Light Rail" in Austin will have to wait for what could be two more years. The new light rail would run from the airport, through downtown and UT, and up to the Old Mueller airport. For one, there's no solid plan and no way to fund it. And now it could be years, before we see more light rail in Austin.

How the possible light rail election flamed out

From statesman.com, May 18, 2008...

When Austin Mayor Will Wynn used his annual "state of the city" speech in October to plant the seed of rail, what he hoped would sprout was a November 2008 referendum on a central city streetcar or light rail system.

As recently as a month ago, Wynn enthusiastically served as emcee for the unveiling of the outlines of such a project, arguing that it is crucial to build a rail line connecting the airport, downtown and other "activity centers" in Central Austin.

But what bloomed from Wynn's initial effort was a "decision tree," a multibranched set of questions that supporters of any future Central Texas rail project will now have to answer as a starting point.
