Perry presses for legislation to get gangs out of Texas
From KEYE, March 5, 2009...
Gov. Rick Perry pushed legislation on Thursday he says will help drive violent gangs out of Texas.
Perry, joined by some Texas police chiefs including Austin chief Art Acevedo, said transnational gangs are trying to expand their influence, recruiting members from schools and communities.
The bill would crack down on online promotion of criminal gangs -- which Perry says will help protect kids who surf the Internet.
The bill would also allow parents and communities to file civil lawsuits against gangs - which could cripple them financially.

Governor says Texas should focus on film business
From Austin Business Journal, March 4, 2009...
Texas Gov. Rick Perry is hoping to make Texas a hot spot in the film industry.
The governor released a statement Wednesday saying he wants the Texas Legislature to provide $60 million in funding for the Texas Film Incentive Program -- an initiative that seeks to create incentives that will attract more film development projects to Texas.
“The entertainment industry is an essential part of Texas’ economy, bringing in more than $1.2 billion over the past 10 years, but those numbers are declining,” Perry said on Wednesday. “We want to create a sustainable program that not only attracts individual productions, but develops the skills, infrastructure and culture that will give us a long term competitive edge in the industry.”

Texas Governor seeks to curb power of eminent domain
From KEYE, January 22, 2009...
Some state lawmakers are working to strengthen property owners' rights against inappropriate uses of eminent domain.
Gov. Rick Perry is calling for a Texas Constitutional amendment which would clearly define "public use." That's the concept that allows the government to seize private property. Some lawmakers say that would force authorities to be more selective about when to use eminent domain.
