Austin prepares after N. Texas bacteria outbreak

"Crypto," as it is called, is resistant to normal chlorine levels.

"It is a contagious disease," said Janet Pichette, Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Epidemiologist. Austin pools haven't seen a major "crypto" outbreak since 2006, when health officials said it broke out in pools near the Travis/Williamson County line.

But it doesn't mean it won't happen again.
