Central Texas could see up to 25,000 evacuees as Gustav approaches the coast
From Austin Business Journal, August 29, 2008...
It’s not even in the Gulf of Mexico yet, but Tropical Storm Gustav is already prompting evacuations across the Gulf South and even action here in Central Texas.
Gustav is now forecasted to come ashore somewhere between Corpus Christi and the western tip of the Florida panhandle sometime on Tuesday as a strong category 3 or higher hurricane. State officials in Texas are now considering whether to issue an evacuation order for coastal counties. In Louisiana, evacuations are likely to begin Saturday morning.
The American Red Cross of Central Texas says it has volunteers ready to open more than 75 shelters in case a Texas evacuation occurs. Officials say the area could handle as many as 25,000 evacuees from coastal cities.

Austin unveils hurricane evacuation plan
From statesman.com, June 6, 2008...
The City of Austin on Monday announced a hurricane preparation plan to address coastal government agencies, nonprofit groups and businesses. It is part of a statewide effort to establish shelter "hubs" in major cities for storm victims.
"This season, we're prepared to handle over 25,000 evacuees in more than 75 shelters in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties," said Scott Swearengin, assistant director of the city's Office of Emergency Management.
The plan, titled Capital Area Shelter Hub, will also include a medical center that can provide care for 800 to 1,000 evacuees. The plan comes in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Rita in 2005, when the area sheltered 18,000 evacuees in 53 shelters.
