Keep watch on typhus, officials warn

Recent tests on pets and wild animals in Travis County showed the presence of typhus, indicating that the illness that struck 20 people earlier this year could recur and that people should continue protecting themselves and their pets from fleas, health officials said Tuesday.

Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department officials said they can't predict whether Travis County will see another outbreak of typhus next year like the cases confirmed from March through August. But they said discussions with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that typhus could be establishing itself in a small population of animals in the area.
