Education was a primary concern for the new German immigrants who arrived in Texas in the 1840s and 1850s.
Before there were public schools, they constructed "free" schools around the state, including one in Austin. And within its walls, one of your neighbors is eager to share the story of the German-Texans who helped shape this part of the world.
Helga von Schweinitz volunteers with the German-Texan Heritage Society, a group of individuals with the common goal of furthering German-Texan culture through many activities.
