Ambitious vision for redeveloping former airport is coming to life

Ten years after the last plane left Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, much of the vast 711-acre site remains an empty hole in the heart of Austin.

But along the western and southern edges of this windy, dusty plain, a unique community is taking shape.

About 380 families live in energy-efficient houses built close together along narrow, tree-lined streets. More than 3,000 people now work at the Dell Children's Medical Center of Texas, adjacent medical and research facilities or the nearby retail center.
