Spill fuels water quality concerns

When a boat capsizes on Lake Travis - one of Central Texas' main sources of drinking water - it can impact more than just the people on board. On May 28, a stolen boat sank in front of the VIP Marina in Volente, leaking gasoline into the water for several hours before it could be removed.

Although Lake Travis is managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority, Volente Mayor Jan Yenawine said LCRA officials told him they were not responsible for water quality, referring him instead to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). He said TCEQ representatives told him dealing with the gasoline leak was LCRA's responsibility.
