More shoppers turning to farmers' market for tomatoes

"Are these safe to eat?" asked one woman browsing tomatoes at the Austin Farmers' Marketin the Triangle shopping center, closely studying the tomato as though attempting to detect any bacteria.

It is a question people are asking more frequently following a year of food recalls due to contaminated products. Tuesday, the Department of State Health Services advised people not to eat uncooked Roma and full-sized tomatoes following an outbreak of salmonella bacteria that has sickened people in nine states, including 21 cases in Texas.
