Water rates in Leander could increase by an average of 21.3 percent over the next three years, according to a proposal made public during a City Council meeting Thursday.
The council initially accepted a plan with slightly different numbers but will vote this summer on the 21.3 percent increase.
Leander residents already pay some of the highest water rates in the area, but city officials said the proposed rate increases are needed to help pay for a $330 million water project that Leander, Cedar Park and Round Rock are banking on to meet their water needs. The project has three phases. Eventually, 141 million gallons of water a day will be pumped from Lake Travis. Pumping is set to start in 2010.
