Texas — according to the 2007 Grape Growers Association report — ranks fifth in the nation as a grape and wine producer. In this same report, it was estimated that there are more than 220 family owned vineyards, covering more than 3,700 acres in Texas.
The Texas wine industry contributes more than $1 billion a year to the state’s economy. These vineyards support about 8,000 jobs for Texans.
The majority of these vineyards are found in the Texas Hill Country. The sloping hills and cooler weather help produce some of the best grapes. The soil and terrain of the Hill Country are very similar to the hills of Italy and France. There are also several other vineyards scattered throughout Texas, including the Panhandle area and even as close as Poteet.
