This May Be The Time For Texas Wine

Texas has big, open country, lots of cattle, plenty of people who act like they own cattle, a bunch of big cities, at least two major languages and wine. Lots of wine.

And wine is not something new to the Lone Star State. One of the nation’s most important 19th-century wineries was in El Paso. Before Prohibition, the state had more than two dozen wineries, and some that are still around, such as Val Verde, hark back to 1883.

Twenty years ago the Wine Spectator put Texas on the national wine map with kind reports about Llano Estacado, Fall Creek, Pheasant Ridge and others. While there are vibrant industries with 50-plus wineries in many states today (Michigan, New York, Virginia, Colorado and, yes, Missouri), Texas got an early start.
